Adrie Kusserow
Her first book of poems HUNTING DOWN THE MONK was published
by BOA Editions as part of their New American Poets Series. She is a
graduate of Harvard Divinity School and her PhD in cultural anthropology
is also from Harvard. She now teaches courses on poverty, reugees,
religion and cultural anthropology at ST. Michael's College. Her poems
often focus on Westerners hunger for meaning and spirituality outside of
the orthodox religions they were raised in, the war in Sudan, and the
challenges of raising children as spiritual beings outside of the
guidelines of any one specific religion. Her second book, The Hunger
Sutras, explores the different kinds of hunger in the world --
spiritual, physical, geographical - that she has seen in her travels as
a cultural anthropologist.
Along with the Sudanese refugees in Vermont, she and her husband started
the New Sudan Education Initiative (www.nesei.org).
